IT project management is the process of planning, organizing, and assigning responsibility for achieving an organization’s specific information technology (IT) goals.
IT project management includes oversight of software development projects, hardware installations, network upgrades, cloud and virtualization deployments, business intelligence and data management projects, and IT service deployments.
In addition to common issues that can lead to project failure, factors that can negatively impact the success of an IT project include advances in technology during project execution, infrastructure changes that affect security and data management, and unknown dependencies between hardware, software, network infrastructure and data. IT projects can also concede a first-use penalty, representing the overall risk that an organization assumes when implementing new technology for the first time. Because the technology has not been used or utilized by the organization before, there may be challenges that will affect the likelihood of project success.
